The Diaper Run
Along the way to the baby home today we stopped to buy a shopping cart full of diapers. I asked our interpreter to tell the cashier that we have 20 children -- all in diapers -- at home. And, that we needed to buy 5,000 rubles worth.
Actually, this mission was the result of cash donations given to us by John's colleagues at Western. We asked the baby home director how to spend the money and she quickly responded with one request: diapers. Our bill was just over 4,900 rubles. I don't know how much she was expecting, but I imagine that they can certainly go through a shopping cart full pretty quickly. And, given the diaperless story that we have for Valya on our first visit, this purchase was quite apropos. When arriving at the baby home, our driver, Nicoli, told us to go inside to visit our children and that he would unload the lot.
For this particular trip out to the baby home we were joined by Ann and Ned from Norfolk, Virginia. They are adopting a boy of 2 years old from the same baby home. We are also expecting to go to court on the same morning -- next Monday. Ned and Ann are great people and we enjoyed spending most of the day with them.
Finally, of particular importance, it is Gotcha Day for Nicoli -- a 4 year old boy picked up today by his new parents: our friends Doug and Stacy. Congratulations Nicoli.
